Global Diamond Mining A Shining Horizon

The diamonds of Fort Drum, known for their exceptional quality and uniqueness, represent a window to a world of possibilities that is still waiting to be fully discovered.

GREEN BAY SAND MINE

Located 5.5 miles North of the intersection of Interstate 4 and US Highway 27, E.R. Jahna’s flagship facility is centrally located between the Orlando and Tampa, FL markets. The mine utilizes a primary wash plant and classifying secondary plant. The plants are fed by one of two large cutter head dredges. The redundancies of this location enable the mine to be a reliable supplier of large volumes of quality sand. Sitting on a footprint of roughly 10,000 acres, the Green Bay Sand Mine is situated to meet the needs of the growing Central Florida markets for decades to come.

HAINES CITY SAND MINE

South of Interstate 4 in Haines City, Florida lies E.R. Jahna’s Haines City Sand Mine. Since opening as a greenfield site in 1974 by Emil Jahna Jr., the Haines City Sand Mine has been supplying Highlands, Polk, Hillsborough Counties and surrounding markets with quality sand. Recent acquisitions of adjacent property has extended the life of the mine to over 25 additional years.

CORPORATE OFFICE
.Fort Drum Crystal Mines corporate and administrative office is located in historic downtown Lake Wales, Florida. It was Lake Wales where Emil Jahna Sr. brought his family in 1925 from Sarasota, Florida to open Ridge Stone and Tile. The manufacturing of concrete roof tile requires the use of sand, and it was in the Ridge Stone and Tile days that mining sand became part of the Jahna family. From the humble beginnings in a three room house remodeled into an office in 1961, the company eventually grew into a larger office which they built in 1980 beside the original corporate location on Tillman Avenue. It was there the company operated for 20 years. In 1999, Jahna purchased and renovated the Caldwell – Temple building on Stuart Avenue in downtown Lake Wales as the new corporate office. The building was vacant at the time and it took over a year to renovate and build out the office space as it is today. Originally built in the early 1920’s, the building had been a furniture store, casket manufacturer, and Masonic Lodge, among other uses. After the renovation and with the help of the Lake Wales as the new corporate office. Dr. Thomas M. Scott,

President

Thomas M. Scott, Assistant Florida State Geologist, discovered the presence of calcite spar geodes within a gray sandy limestone in the old Rucks pit (now the large recreational lake adjacent to the mine campground). Besides the presence of the calcite geodes, the mine was of special interest to scientists in that it was continuously pumped, allowing for in situ collecting of fossil specimens and for direct study of the exposed geological formations.
